Windows XP hasn’t got Scandisk. SFC isn’t check files system and disk surface. Windows 2000, XP and probably Vista has got Chkdsk and it’s GUI version in disk properties (-> Tools). I prefer command line version because it’s show more information’s. For example numbers of bad sectors. There is another problem with disk error. Modern disk use S.M.A.R.T. to hide some information from software, for example automatically reallocate bad sector to backup sector. More on Wikipedia. For HDD chkdsk is useful to check file system integrity in rare situation. NTFS is journaling file system and shout less likely to become corrupted in the event of power failure or system crash.

P.S. Sorry for my bad English.
