Microsoft Automates Fix for Shortcut Flaw

From Keith Ward, About.com GuideJuly 21, 2010

Follow me on:

Microsoft has released a fix for the dangerous shortcut flaw in Windows that I've been reporting on for several days. Find it here.

The fix will change your icons; take a look at the images in the Microsoft advisory. The good thing is that you don't need to do anything except click the "Fix it" link in the "Enable workaround" box. If you want to undo the fix later, click the box next to it to disable the workaround.

This is only a temporary solution, I'm sure; folks (like me) want their icons; it makes it much easier to know what you're clicking on. Microsoft will change the code ASAP and issue a permanent fix in time; until then, however, this will do. As I mentioned in an earlier post, do not go the fix-it-yourself route unless you're an expert.

Remember that this affects all current versions of Windows, including XP, Vista and Windows 7.
