Introducing Windows XP:
Windows XP is the newest line of the Windows operating system. Windows XP was released on October 25, 2001. Presumably, the letters XP come from the word experience, indicating how XP has evolved from previous versions of Windows.
Common XP Versions:
XP comes in several versions, with three versions being the most popular:
XP Versions for Specific Hardware Configurations:
XP also comes in some specialty versions that are intended for use on computers with specific hardware configurations:
  • XP Tablet PC Edition - for use on tablet PCs
  • XP Professional x64 Edition - for use on computers with 64-bit processors
  • XP Embedded - for use on embedded systems
XP Versions for Specific Markets:
Additionally, XP comes in some versions that are only available in certain markets:
  • XP Start Edition - available in developing countries
  • XP Home Edition N - available in Europe
  • XP Professional Edition N - available in Europe
Differences between XP and Previous Versions:
XP follows Windows 2000 and Windows Me. In comparison to previous versions, XP is more stable and more secure, and XP is generally easier to use. XP offers a:
  • more customizable desktop
  • less cluttered taskbar
  • redesigned Start menu
  • easier to use Windows Explorer and Control Panel
