The Windows 7 battery icon is outlined in yellow here; this shows the computer running on battery power. If the computer was plugged in, a plug and cord icon would be next to the battery.

Windows 7 power management is a key topic for PC laptop users, and, to a lesser extent, desktop workers. Without proper power management, you decrease battery life; alternatively, you may be robbing yourself of power you need for performance. Fortunately, Windows 7 has an outstanding power management system. Let's see how it works.

The most obvious part of Windows 7 power management is the battery icon. It's in the lower right-hand corner of the Taskbar; it looks, naturally enough, like a battery, as shown here. If you're working on a laptop, you'll see the battery power remaining as a graphic. If you want more exact information, hover your cursor over the icon; you'll get a percentage of battery life left, and how long you have before your computer shuts itself down. Note: remember to save any work before this happens, as you'll lose any unsaved information when the shutdown occurs.
