Windows Live Messenger

From About.com

Introducing Windows Live Messenger:
Windows Live Messenger is a free instant messaning client for Windows users. Windows Live Messenger offers instant messaging, voice chat, file sharing, and more. Windows Live Messenger is the newest version of MSN Messenger, which has been rebranded to fit the new Windows Live brand of online services.
Windows Live Messenger - Features from MSN Messenger:
Windows Live Messenger offers many of the same features found in MSN Messenger:
  • instant messaging
  • voice chat
  • file sharing
  • online games
PC-to-Phone Calls Using WLM:
For the first time, you can use WLM to make phone calls to regular phones. The phone calls are made through Verizon Web Calling, and rates are as low as 2.3 cents a minute to North America and western Europe.
Sharing Folders in WLM:
Sharing folders make it much easier to share several files with a contact. Instead of having to select and send each file individually, you can just drag-and-drop the files onto your contact's nickname. The files are kept in a folder that you and your contact share. If your friend deletes the file, it'll be deleted from your shared folder. You and your friend can both access the shared files from your desktop, without signing into Windows Live Messenger.
Other New Features in WLM:
Some other new features make Windows Live Messenger easier and more fun to use:
  • Word wheeled search of the contacts list
  • Start conversations even when status is set to Appear Offline
  • Change a contact’s nickname
  • Choose a custom color theme for all of Windows Live Messenger, not just the conversation window
  • Add time-stamps to your incoming messages so you know what time they were sent at
  • Choose whether to display your friend's nickname with every new message in an on-going conversation
Download Windows Live Messenger:
You can download Windows Live Messenger direct from the Windows Live Ideas Web site. It's a 15 MB download, however, so you should plan on it taking a while to download if you're accessing the Internet over a dial-up connection.
