How To Create User Accounts

Taking the time to create user accounts for everyone who uses your computer provides everyone more privacy and gives you greater control over security and safety. Follow these instructions to create user accounts in Windows Vista.
Difficulty: Easy
Time Required: 5 minutes

Here's How:

  1. In the Windows Vista Start menu search box, type "user" and click on User Accounts when it appears in the programs list.
  2. Click on the Manage another account link. If User Account Control prompts your for approval, give it.
  3. Click on the Create a new account.
  4. Type a name for the account into the text box.
  5. Choose between a standard or administrator account type. Only choose an administrator account if you trust the person not to make changes to your computer that could puts its security at risk. Also, if you want to use the Windows Vista parental controls on the account, you should make it a standard account.
  6. Click the Create Account button to create the user account.

Tips:

  1. After you create the account, you should create a password for the account to protect the user's files and your computer's security.
  2. You can change the picture associated with the account after creating it.
  3. To protect kids from content you find inappropriate, set up parental controls on the newly created account.
